Maurice Sendak was a great inspiration for writers and children. He leaves behind beautiful, glorious books. Read one and see how much can be done with hardly any words at all. Let him inspire you the way he has inspired me.

In the opening scene of Ann Patchett’s novel State of Wonder, there is a line that reads: …then with no more explanation he gave her the letter to show just how little about this awful fact he knew.

Use this line to inspire a short story of up to 1000 words (then go and read the novel – it’s great!)

I’m struggling with the title for my next book this week – the title I’ve long loved is, perhaps, too similar to the title of an excellent new YA book.  Happens sometimes and everything normally works out for the best.
